76% had gifted sums over £2000.
Unsurprisingly the most common reason for this was to help family members get on the property ladder. 17% had made the gift towards a house deposit and a further 12% were supporting mortgage costs.
Other reasons included helping with a one-off expense, such as replacing a car or boiler (17%), helping pay bills like household utilities (9%), educational costs (6%) or rent (3%).
22% were gifts for no specific purpose and the practice of gifting may become more popular as inheritance tax allowances continue to be squeezed under the new budget, especially if pensions are brought under the inheritance tax regime from 2027 as proposed.
